The Link Between TMJ and Posture

Proper alignment of the bones, joints and muscles sets you up for optimal body function. Also, it is less than ideal to regularly sit hunched over your computer or slouch while standing or walking. In conclusion, the accumulation of these less than optimal positions eventually takes a toll.

A misaligned spine and poor posture will cause your lower jaw (mandible) to jut forward. This contributes to creating a bad bite, which is one of the primary causes of TMJ disorders.

Relief for TMJ Disorders Through NUCCA

Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care and particularly the protocols from the National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association (NUCCA) are extremely effective at addressing temperomandibular joint symptoms from a holistic perspective. Firstly, the upper jaw is attached to the skull and NUCCA doctors study the relationship between the skull and the neck. Secondly, we take specific measurements from NUCCA x-rays. These x-rays help identify how to best adjust each individual patient based on their anatomy. Lastly, a NUCCA adjustment is very unique to each anatomy so no one will repeat itself. Even though it may feel similar, your anatomy is different from even your own siblings.

The Goal of NUCCA Care

The goal for patients with TMJ disorders in our office is to literally get their head on straight to facilitate body balance. Unfortunately, chronic poor posture can not be addressed by consciously sitting up straight, rolling your shoulders back or getting a fancy chair for your workstation. However, chiropractic can help with postural problems. According to Sue Hyland:

Postural Reflexes are automatic movements that control the equilibration we require once upright and moving and having to combat the effects of gravity. They maintain posture, balance and fluidity of movement…These reflexes are controlled by interplay between the sensory vestibular system; in the inner ear, the cerebellum and motor nerves controlling the muscles…the area of control is higher up the brain stem within the mid brain.

As you can see, conscious effort has little to do with our posture. It is deep set within our neurology. The good news is that NUCCA helps end jaw pain. Click here to see how.
