Types of Migraines
These headaches are recurring attacks that patients describe as a throbbing pain on one side of the head or behind their eye. These episodes can last from hours to days, cause nausea or sensitivity to light and sound. These migraines tend to be more common in women, and are often preceded by flashing lights or zigzag lines in vision. There are two major types: migraines with aura and without aura.
Migraines used to be considered vascular in nature. Recent research shows that they are neurological in origin, related to a wave of nerve cell activity that sweeps across the brain. The causes of a migraine vary, and triggers range from changing seasons to certain foods to anxiety to hormonal changes to situations such as chiari malformation.
Migraine with aura sufferers experience symptoms that occur about 30 minutes before the head pain starts, it was formerly considered a “classic”. These symptoms are usually vision changes or odd sensations in other parts of the body. Aura is a warning sign or migraine prodrome. People with auras often complain of seeing jagged light in their peripheral vision or a flickering light during the aura.
“Chiropractic offers relief…reduction of attacks…less intense episodes…prevention of tension and migraine headaches”
This is the most common type experienced by 2/3’s of patients. This type of migraine used to be called “common” for that reason. Typically, people with this kind, experience more frequent and more severe attacks than those with aura. Common symptoms are: pain on one side of head, throbbing pain, sensitivity of light, nausea and vomiting. Menstrual hormonal changes often trigger one in women.
The typical medical treatment for migraine symptom relief is prescription drugs year after year. If you listen closely to the TV drug ads you will soon learn that these medications have serious side effects. Chiropractic care is a natural solution to get relief for your migraines.
The University of Maryland Medical Center reports that in one study, 22% of subjects that received chiropractic care reported more than a 90% reduction of migraine attacks. Also, 49% reported a significant reduction of the intensity. In another study, chiropractic adjustments worked as well as the medication in reducing migraines and had fewer side effects. Other studies show that chiropractic care worked as well as medication in preventing tension and migraine headaches.
