Tips for Living Longer

Tips for Living Longer

Everyone wants to live to be 100! We used to say this, but aren’t so sure anymore. After all, we believe that quality over quantity is what people are truly searching for. Quality of life that is. We are aging, and we get to choose how we take care of ourselves and our families. At the end of the day, we want to help you avoid degenerative conditions and diseases for as long as possible. Here are a few tips  for living a better quality of life or a pura vida!

You Really Are What You Eat

Dr. Tapia has a bachelor’s in Nutrition from San Diego State University, and has heard, “you are what you eat” countless times over the years. Are we really? Should you avoid all things processed, all sugar, all gluten? Possibly. The reality is that what we eat does impact our health greatly, as it acts like fuel for your body. Eating a balanced diet will not only extend your life but give you a better quality of life. You can also check out Detox Tips You Can Use!

Now, we all know someone that drank a liter of Coke, handfuls of cookies, and plenty of fast food every day that lived to be in their 80’s or 90’s without any true ill effect. However, upon closer inspection we learn that they got way more exercise and physical activity, less TV, zero computers, and oftentimes even grew their own food when younger. So our best advice is…everyone is different. Everyone’s lifestyle and circumstances are unique to them. Our bodies are dynamic, so moderation is our golden rule of thumb. We rarely drink sodas, choose vegetables from all colors of the rainbow, shop the perimeter of the grocery store, and stay away from as many boxed foods as possible. Subsequently, we believe that will better our quality of life.

Take Care of Your Body

Take care of your body. After all, it’s truly the only place you have to live. You can replace your house, your car, and even your possessions, but not your body. We can replace body parts to a certain extent, but they are never quite the same. Staying active and flexible is critical for longevity. Movement will result in a better quality of life! So pick any type of physical activity to keep your muscles, heart, and lungs pumping. It’s super important to keep your body moving and flexible every single day (you can check out our 5 Motivational Myths to keep you going!) . If you sit a lot at work, make sure to drink plenty of water which will help remind you to stand up, move around, stretch and use the restroom- we’ve made a list of 10 Harmful Things that come with too much sitting around. If we haven’t recommended specific stretches and exercises for you as part of our recommendations, ask us next time that you are in the office.

Good Emotional Health is Critical

We can’t stress enough how important it is to have strong social connections. This doesn’t mean you have to have a million friends or a thousand social followers. We are talking about a handful of people that you can count on. Peers who will provide a better quality of life. Friends you can trust. Also, friends that you can call on. Or, friends that can trust you and call on you right back. And just as important, find ways that work for you to relieve stress and keep up your heart health. For many of our patients, that means exercising, meditating, praying, or seeking the health of a professional. Whatever works for you and don’t forget to have compassion on yourself.

The bottom line is…you get to choose your quality of life by always remaining proactive with your health. No one can do this for us. It is a conscious act that requires time and effort. Need more help, don’t hesitate to reach out to us.
