Sciatica & Lower Back Pain Relief

True sciatica relief in San Diego, CA. Lower back pain & sciatica often go to together. Sciatica specifically refers to pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is composed of several nerves that branch from your low back through the hips/pelvic area and buttocks. Sciatic nerve pain travels down the leg on one side of your body. Sciatic nerve pain occurs most often when a spinal disc has herniated or bulged. It can also occur if a bone spur is compressing a spinal nerve. The pain can be quite intense, and patients often report feeling numbness, weakness or tingling in the leg.

The pair of sciatic nerves are the largest and longest nerves in your body. They can be as wide as your thumb in diameter. They go from your pelvis down each leg. Five smaller nerves make up each sciatic nerve, which branch into the leg, thigh, knee, calf, ankle and foot.

Symptoms of Sciatica

Common sciatica symptoms are pain, tingling, numbness and muscle weakness into the hip, buttock, leg, calf or foot. It’s common for the pain to start in the lower back and travel down the leg. In chronic case, the leg pain is worse than the back pain. A misaligned lumbar spine or pelvis can be the cause of sciatica. This misalignment can put pressure on the sciatic nerve. A bulging disc or a herniated disc can also cause sciatic pain. Bulging discs are due to degeneration resulting from long-term stress on the low back, while herniated discs are caused by a trauma or an injury. For more information on this, read about bulging discs vs herniated discs. Other causes of sciatic nerve pain are arthritis, diabetes, tumors and vitamin deficiencies. Standing, walking, sitting, running, lifting heavy items, twisting, bending, sneezing and even coughing can make symptoms worse.

Lower Back Pain

Lower back pain and hip pain often accompany sciatica symptoms. After all, the nerves that come out of the low back comprise the sciatic nerve. Patients are able to ignore lower back pain for a while, but as the condition progresses…it becomes more difficult to ignore sciatic nerve pain. We stress seeking treatment right away. The longer patients wait, the more intense symptoms usually get. Pain killers are helpful in masking the pain for a while, but they are not a long-term solution- one of our patients had been struggling with low back pain for more than a decade. We encourage you to get help sooner vs. later as some of the causes of low back pain and sciatica are serious.

Natural and Gentle Relief

In one study, 60% of sciatica patients who failed traditional management benefited from chiropractic adjustments as much as back surgery (microdiscectomy). Researchers concluded that patients with symptomatic lumbar disc herniation should consider chiropractic care combined with non-surgical spinal decompression and laser therapy, then surgery last if necessary. Aftercare at our office, one patient says she now has zero back pain! Don’t lose hope!
